I helped Catherine design her book Guide to Spiritual L.A. - The Irreverent, the Awake, and the True. The book is delightfully eccentric and interesting, covering a wide range of spiritual insights and history about the spiritual side of Los Angeles.
Starting with just a manuscript and Catherine’s photos, I designed how the content would be organized including a typography and grid system as well as a colour palette that started with blue - the colour of spirituality, intuition and inspiration. I illustrated all the maps in a minimal and easy to read style, and I did some photo editing and retouching as needed.
This travel guide has been called a “coffee table” style book with it’s large photos, and it was designed to be taken on-the-go with it’s small-medium size and the detailed maps that outline geography specific tours and day trips.
Included here are some alternate book cover designs. We explored many in the designs and Catherine hosted a Facebook poll to ask her fans which cover they liked the best. The winner became the cover you see here. This book has received 2 awards: The 2020 Nautilus Award and 2020 National Indie Book Award.
